A study of the evolution of radio pulsars through improved population synthesis

چکیده
We simulate the birth and evolution of radio pulsars throughout the Galaxy and their observation in a region around the Sun, using recently derived models for the velocity distribution of neutron stars and for the galactic distribution of free electrons. We confirm our previous result that the properties of the pulsar population are best described by models in which the magnetic field does not decay significantly during the pulsar lifetime. The small number of young pulsars at large distance to the Galactic Plane suggests that many pulsars are born with small velocities. We derive a birth rate of radio pulsars near the Sun of 2.3 kpc−2 Myr−1, and argue that this rate can be sustained by stars with mass M > 10 Msun, in OB-associations.

Population statistics study of radio and gamma - ray pulsars in the Galactic plane
We present results of our pulsar population synthesis of ordinary isolated and millisecond pulsars in the Galactic plane. Over the past several years, a program has been developed to simulate pulsar birth, evolution and emission using Monte Carlo techniques. We have added to the program the capability to simulate millisecond pulsars, which are old, recycled pulsars with extremely short periods....
متن کاملBirth and Evolution of Isolated Radio Pulsars
We investigate the birth and evolution of Galactic isolated radio pulsars. We begin by estimating their birth space velocity distribution from proper motion measurements of Brisken et al. (2002, 2003). We find no evidence for multimodality of the distribution and favor one in which the absolute one-dimensional velocity components are exponentially distributed and with a three-dimensional mean v...
متن کاملHow is Binary Radio - Pulsars with Black Holes Population Rich ?
Using ”Scenario Machine” we have carried out population synthesis of radio pulsar with black hole binaries (BH+Psr) in context of the most wide assumptions about star mass loss during evolution, binary stars mass ratio distribution, kick velocity and envelope mass lost during collapse. Our purpose is to display that under any suppositional parameters of evolution scenario BH+Psr population have...
متن کاملForty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملEnergetic Young Radio Pulsars
Young radio pulsars shed vast amounts of rotational energy, sometimes as high as 100,000 times the total energy loss rate from the sun. The wide range of phenomena resulting from this energy loss include: glitches, timing noise, jets, bow shocks, bullets and plerions and are be reviewed from an observational perspective. Past and proposed surveys for young radio pulsars are summarised along wit...
